VA Angus Breeders Show Rules

JUNIOR SHOW RULES AND REGULATIONS

  1. Exhibitors must be active members of the Virginia Junior Angus Association.
  2. All animals must be shown by owner. If for any reason an owner cannot show his/her own animal, permission must be obtained from the Show Committee for another Junior Angus member in the same age division to show the animal.
  3. Exhibitor’s birthday must be from 8 to 21 as of January 1 of the current year and must be a Junior, Regular or Life Member of the American Angus Association.
  4. All animals must be the sole property of, in care of, and transferred in the name of the exhibitor by November 20, 2020.
  5. Bred & Owned are assumed to be sole property of exhibitor.
  6. The date of issue on the registration certificate will be the date used to determine the eligibility of Owned Heifers.
  7. Health papers required for out of state cattle only
  8. All Junior exhibits must be checked in by the Show Committee.
  9. The exhibitor name on the Registration Certificate should be the same as the name on the official entry blank, and no joint names will be accepted, except in the Bred & Owned Division. Multi-owned animals will be accepted for these classes only. However, the exhibitor must be the breeder and first owner.
  10. A Show Committee will be appointed by the President of the Virginia Junior Angus Association, which must include at least three Junior members and at least one advisor. One of the main tasks of the Show Committee will be the checking in of entries. All inquiries or discrepancies pertaining to the show should be directed to the Show Committee only. All decisions of the Show Committee are final.
  11. COW/CALF DIVISION (There will be classes for both Bred & Owned and Owned cows with calves.) Any cow/calf pair may be exhibited provided the calf is bred and owned by the Junior exhibitor and the following rules are met:
    • Cow must be bred and owned by the exhibitor. If the cow was not bred by the exhibitor, the issue date on the recorded transfer of the cow must precede the breeding date of the cow for calf at side.
    • Calf must be the cow's most recent natural calf.
    • Calf must be registered by show date.
    • There will be two divisions for Cow/Calf Pairs: Bred and Owned Division and Owned Division.
    • Entry fee is $27.00 Any animals shown in multiple classes (i.e., calf from cow/calf pair) will be charged $17.00 per class after their initial $27.00 entry fee. Total entry fee for one (1) cow/calf pair and the calf shown individually would be: $44.00.
  12. BRED & OWNED HEIFERS AND BULLS
    • Bred and Owned means the Junior exhibitor must be the breeder and first owner of the animal entered. Breeder is defined as the owner of record of the dam at the time the calf is conceived. First Owner is defined as the owner of record of the dam at the time the calf is dropped.
    • Bred & Owned Heifers and Bulls will be divided in classes according to standard show classification and number of entries. Classes will be broken down at the discretion of the show committee and at the discretion of the American Angus Association representative at the show.
    • Entry fee is $27.00.
  13. OWNED HEIFER DIVISION
    • Owned Heifers will be divided in classes according to standard show classification and number of entries. Classes will be broken down at the discretion of the show committee and at the discretion of the American Angus Association representative at the show.
    • Entry fee is $27.00 .
  14. PROSPECT STEER DIVISION:
    • There will be one prospect steer division with champions. The division will be Registered Angus Steers.
    • Registered Angus steers are registered as either bulls or steers in accordance with the American Angus Association.
    • There will not be a Bred & Owned steer division; these steers will be shown in the owned division.
    • Steers will be shown in classes according to age.
    • Entry fee is $27.00.
  15. COUNTY GROUP OF THREE:
    • Three animals may be entered by any county.
    • Each county may have as many groups as they like.
    • Showmen must be Junior members from that county unless none are present.
    • There is no entry fee for this class.
  16. SHOWMANSHIP:
    • (The ages below are as of January 1, 2020)
    • Senior- ages 18-21
    • Intermediate - ages 14-17
    • Junior- ages 8-13
    • Novice -age 8 AND never shown at Breeders Show (excluding Pee-Wee)
    • PeeWee - (see below)
  17. PEEWEE SHOWMANSHIP:
    • Showmanship open to Junior Angus members that are not 8 years old as of January 1, 2020.
    • Animals for Peewee Showmanship must be approved by the Peewee Showmanship Advisory Committee from the cattle present at the Junior Breeders' Show. Please don't bring your own cattle.
  18. Online Entry Deadline no later than November 20, 2020.
  19. Late entries will be charged at $50 per head.
  20. Facilities will be available at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 3, 2020. All Entries must be on the show grounds and checked in by 8:00 p.m. Friday December 4, 2020.
  21. The Virginia Junior Angus Association, or persons acting on their behalf are not responsible for accidents or any losses
  22. ORIGINAL REGISTRATION CERTIFICATES MUST BE PRESENTED WHEN ANIMALS ARE CHECKED IN. ELECTRONICALLY STORED REGISTRATION CERTIFICATES ARE NOT ACCEPTED - ONLY THE ORIGINAL CERTIFICATES ISSUED BY THE AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION. They must be checked in by the Show Committee.
  23. All entries are subject to Part 3, Section IX, of the American Angus Associations Rules entitled "Eligibility, Conformation and Structure of Animals Presented for Exhibition". This includes the American Angus Association's mouthing program to determine the age classification of animals in the show. Any animal not having a correct or legible tattoo is ineligible to compete and will be barred from showing. Once disqualified due to an incorrect or illegible tattoo, animals cannot be re-tattooed and checked at the show. BLOOD TYPING FOR PARENTAGE VERIFICATION - Under the Association Rules (Part 3, Section II, Rule 2) each animal for which entry application (registration) is received, may be subjected to a blood type test to verify both ACCURACY OF PARENTAGE AND TRADITIONAL ANGUS BLOOD TYPE. All division champions and reserve champions may be blood typed and any animal found to have non-traditional blood or where a possible parentage exclusion (where a sire or dam does not qualify as a parent) exists, will have premiums withheld pending investigation.
  24. Any infringement of the Rules for the 2020 Virginia Junior Angus Breeders Show will be reviewed by the Virginia Angus Association Board of Directors to determine if any disciplinary action should be instituted. Any infringement of the rules could result in barring an individual from showing in any show sponsored by the Virginia Junior Angus Association for a maximum of two (2) years.
  25. All cattle on tie out must have halter and neck rope. Bulls over six (6) months old must have halter, neck rope and be on a nose lead.
  26. Each exhibitor must keep manure removed from the aisle way behind the animals and deposit it at the designated place outside the building.
  27. All blocking chutes must be used in the designated areas.
  28. Any Junior member is eligible to exhibit in the open show without open entry fee, provided the Junior recorded as the owner on the registration paper is the showman. Junior members must enter their animals in the open show to be eligible to participate in the open show. Junior cattle, to be eligible to exhibit in the open show without fee, must have exhibited in the Junior show and be shown by a junior member.
  29. Each exhibitor is responsible for having his/her animals presented in its natural conformation and structure without alteration or modification, except for the grooming of hair and hooves. The exhibition of cattle displaying false hair will not be allowed. Painting of white skin and surgical alternation of an animal's conformation or appearance is prohibited. This includes the use of graphite, powders, hemp, or other similar substances externally, and steroids, growth stimulants, or artificially filling internally. Any animal found to be in violation will be barred from showing. FDA approved implants may be used in steers.
  30. All entries are subject to visual inspection and/or laboratory testing. The exhibitor of any entry found to be in violation of the above rules will forfeit all awards and premiums, and may be disqualified from exhibiting at future Association sponsored shows.
  31. All entry fees include bedding.
  32. Effective July 1, 2004, at any show for which the American Angus Association appropriates funds toward the payment of premiums, no exhibitors, and individuals assisting exhibitors or member owners at such show shall be allowed to use any coloring agents, on any animal exhibited. The Association may adopt and implement various tests designed to monitor this prohibition, including but not limited to a "white towel" or "white glove" test. No aerosol cans or other pressurized containers will be allowed in designated make up areas.

COW/CALF BRED & OWNED

Any female that qualifies for female classes in the Association’s standard classifications are not eligible to show in the cow/calf classes.  However, the calf at the side of the female is eligible to show in its respective class.

J7.  Cow/Calf Class – cows three (3) years of age and younger, cows must be born January 1, 2017 through August 31, 2018. Calf must be the cow’s most recent natural calf and be no more than 280 days of age on the day of the show.

J8.  Cow/Calf Class – cows four (4) years of age and older, cows must be born December 31, 2016 or earlier. Calf must be the cow’s most recent natural calf and be no more than 280 days of age on the day of the show.

OPEN SHOW RULES & REGULATIONS

  1. OPEN SHOW CATTLE WILL BE SHOWN IN THE SAME RING AT THE SAME TIME UNDER THE SAME JUDGE AS THE OWNED JUNIOR CATTLE. THERE WILL BE TWO RECORD KEEPERS AND SEPARATE RIBBONS/BANNERS FOR EACH SHOW
  2. All exhibitors must be active members of the American Angus Association or the Virginia Junior Angus Association, must reside in Virginia or a state bordering Virginia.
  3. Health papers required for out of state cattle only
  4. Only Virginia Breeders and Juniors who are members in good standing of the Virginia Angus Association or the Virginia Junior Angus Association are eligible for the special awards listed at the end of this program.
  5. All animals must be owned by the exhibitor at the time of entry and recorded by the American Angus Association on the Certificate of Registry.
  6. A $32.00 fee is required for each Bull/Heifer entry (includes bedding). The fee for each entry in the Cow/Calf class will be $37.00 (includes bedding). Calves must be entered as individuals for a $17.00 fee.
  7. Online Entry Deadline no later than November 20, 2020.
  8. No exhibitor with outstanding balances or entry fees will be allowed to stall their cattle. Entry forms may be reproduced if additional space is needed.
  9. ALL CATTLE IN TIE OUT MUST HAVE HALTER AND NECK ROPE. BULLS MUST HAVE HALTER, NECK ROPE, AND A NOSE LEAD.
    • Any Virginia Junior member is eligible to show in the open show without paying an open entry fee, providing the Virginia Junior is recorded as the owner on the Registration Certificate and is the showman, and the animals were shown in the Junior show. Junior members must enter their animals in the open show to be eligible to participate in the open show. If no additional open entry fee is paid; only the ju­nior or another junior member may show the animal. If an adult shows the entry, a double open show entry fee will be charged onsite.
  10. Each exhibitor must supply his own feed and hay.
  11. All animals must have a legible tattoo in both ears which corresponds to the Registration Certificate.
  12. Exhibitors must have the original Registration Certificate. ELECTRONICALLY STORED REGISTRATION CERTIFICATES ARE NOT ACCEPTED. ­ONLY THE ORIGINAL CERTIFICATES ISSUED BY THE AMERICAN ANGUS ASSOCIATION.
  13. Each exhibitor must keep manure removed from the aisle way behind the animals and deposit it at a place designated outside the building.
  14. All exhibits must be checked in on Friday, December 4, 2020, by 8:00 p.m.
  15. All blocking chutes must be used in the designated area.
  16. The Show Committee reserves the right to refuse any entry offered and to require removal from the grounds of an animal which the Committee, for any reason, deems unfit.
  17. The exhibitor assumes all risks for damage or loss, either to person or property. It is further expressly understood and agreed, between the exhibitor and Olde Dominion Ag Complex that the show incurs no liability or obligation to the exhibitor, other than to permit the exhibitor to use the grounds or buildings for exhibits.
  18. All decisions and interpretation of the rules by the Show Committee are final.
  19. O34.    Breeders’ Six Head: The exhibitor of the breeders six head must be breeder and first owner, identified by the same member code for the animals exhibited. Cattle owned by other exhibitors may be included provided the exhibitor of the breeders six head is the breeder and first owner of the included animals(s). Animals must be exhibited in individual classes. Cattle bred and owned by a junior member(s) may be included if the exhibitor of the breeders’ six head is an individual or married couple and is the parent or legal guardian of the junior member(s)
